How a childhood dream and a wedding dance led to a new beginning
Jessica and Kyle Donovan first stepped into our studio to learn some basic dance steps for their wedding reception. They enjoyed the experience so much they decided to choreograph a routine for their first dance as husband and wife. They took lessons for six months to learn and perfect their routine. While Kyle became more confident in his dancing skills, Jessica desired to dance competitively. During those six months, Jessica realized how much she really loved dancing and how happy it made her feel. It had always been a dream from childhood to dance competitively. Kyle could see that twinkle in her eye and that strong passion she had for dance. He encouraged her to continue taking lessons and pursue her dream.
“I’m Jessica’s number one fan," Kyle said. “As her husband, I support her whole heartedly and it makes me so happy to see her doing something that she truly loves,”
Jessica began training a year ago with Instructor Sam Walker. She has been working very hard preparing for a solo routine as well as a few other dances that she will perform at the Ohio Regional Newcomer Competition in May.
As a young girl Jessica studied ballet, jazz and tap. She continued danced in theater and high school musicals but never had danced with a partner. Studying ballroom dance has taught her to relay on a partner which requires a different skill set. Jessica takes about two lessons weekly but in preparation for a competition, she has increased her lessons to four lesson per week. Her goal with private dance lessons is to be trained technically and improve her overall dancing ability.
"Dancing is my escape from the real world, my one true creative outlet where I can express myself," said Jessica. "It's a ton of fun and I also enjoy dancing with my husband Kyle at the dance parties and at special events,” she added. "He is continuing to take lessons to keep up his skills and I appreciate that."
Jessica enjoys learning from Sam and Instructor Renae Smith. She credits both instructors on the growth she has made as a dancer. Not only has her posture improved but she is able to place and connect her body weight to each dance so that the steps and movement are smooth and graceful.
Although it felt odd and different at first, Jessica states that allowing yourself to be trained appropriately is rewarding and seeing the improvement of your movements only encourages you to want to continue learning. After each lesson, she leaves the studio happy and invigorated and rushes home to share the highlights of her lesson with her husband, Kyle.
“Jessica is a dedicated dancer and great student,” said Walker and Smith. “She sets goals every week and we give her the guidance and instruction to help her fulfill them on the dance floor,” they both added.
Jessica is a dog trainer at Invisible Fence of Columbus East. In addition to dancing, she enjoys reading, watching movies and taking her dogs to the park with her husband.
