EMPTY NESTER TURNS HER SADNESS TO JOY WITH DANCE

Right Star

One of the most difficult times in a parent’s life is when their children leave home. JoAnne Thomas knew she needed to find a hobby during this time of transition. An avid hockey fan and mother of two hockey athletes, JoAnne kept herself busy attending her sons’ games and cheering them on from the stands. As a member of the Westerville Warcats Board and Registrar she was responsible for assuring both players and coaches had the appropriate credentials, checking players’ grades, coordinating the Bantam Bridge program for players entering high school and providing information to the district. She also assisted with the tryout registration, summer conditioning, as well as the banquet and senior nite festivities.

When her eldest son, Clay, moved away a few years ago to attend The Ohio State University to pursue a degree in engineering, she began to realize she only had a few more years before her youngest son, Cole, would be graduating and leaving home. The reality of becoming an empty nester began settling in. JoAnne knew she needed something that would bring her joy replacing the sadness of these life changes. Through learning to dance she replaced her sadness with joy.

Growing up JoAnne always enjoyed watching her father clog dance and her parents dance western square dancing. She can remember how much fun her parents had dancing and the new friends they made. This past February she decided to take a few introductory lessons leading her to want to follow in their dancing footsteps. The experience made her feel so alive and gave her a way to filter all of her emotions through dance. She quickly knew she wanted to continue dancing and began taking lessons regularly at the studio.

“Once I took a few lessons, I became absolutely hooked,” said JoAnne. “I get so excited and look forward to each dance lesson and truly miss it when I’m not there,” she added.

Over the past few weeks, JoAnne doubled up on her lessons in preparation for the Newcomer dance competition. She danced 40 entries performing 10 different dances.

"I was so busy going from dance to dance I didn't have time to worry about what I was doing," she said. "I felt more confident each time I went out on the dance floor. I absolutely loved the experience."

JoAnne is looking forward to competing at the Ohio Regional Buckeye Ball August 12-13 as well as attending the National competition in Orlando in October. She is working on a solo dance with Instructor Sam Walker using rumba, cha cha and merengue dance patterns.

"I have learned so much from my Instructors Sam, Keith Jastram and Sarah May who continue to encourage me," she said. "They are amazing teachers. “ JoAnne is a natural on the dance floor,” Walker said. “She has grown so much as a dancer over these past few months and I am looking forward to dancing with her at these events and competitions.”

She encourages anyone in a personal transition to channel their emotions by learning how to dance. It has been the anchor she needed to get her through this life changing experience. She is grateful to have joined our Westerville Fred Astaire family and has met some great people who also share similar experiences as well as her passion for dance.

JoAnne is a domestic engineer and previously worked 13 years for Nationwide Insurance. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, watching football and hockey games especially the hockey playoffs which she is hopeful that she will see her Columbus Blue Jackets make it there one day.
