Fred Astaire Dance Studio Westerville teamed up with The Pink Fund for a special dance party - Dancing with the Survivors on Thursday, October 1st from 6:30pm - 10:00pm at Monaco's Palace & Catering, Columbus, Ohio. The evening featured local breast cancer survivors and/or a family member dancing in honor of a breast cancer survivor paired with professional Fred Astaire dancers performing ballroom dances while raising money for The Pink Fund. Proceeds from the evening were used to provide financial assistance to breast cancer patients in active treatment who qualified according to The Pink Fund's guidelines.

DANCING CAN HEAL THE SOUL
Have you ever been faced with a life changing experience that left you broken but you were determined to find that pastime that would restore your joy? Ballroom dancing at the Fred Astaire Westerville studio was the answer for Rebecca Cripe. A little over a year and a half ago, Rebecca Cripe had gone through a heart-breaking divorce and a very difficult time in her life. She wanted to feel whole again so she began to think of those things she used to enjoy as a child and as a young adult during her college years. She immediately recalled her experiences dancing in liturgical and contemporary dances as well as musical plays at her church, ballet lessons she had taken as a child and the ballroom dance club she was involved in while in college. Rebecca soon realized what was missing in her life was dance and she began taking lessons at the Westerville studio.
Rebecca treats herself to about three dance lessons a week to strengthen and further develop her skill in ballroom dancing. Over the past year, she has seen her confidence bloom on and off the dance floor. Dancing has truly been her therapy. What Rebecca likes most about dancing is seeing how she and her professional dance partner can create a performance so beautiful on the dance floor that not only brings her joy but also to those around her. Dancing has also helped her to be more resilient and optimistic.
“Dancing at Fred Astaire Westerville helped me regain that inner passion I had forgotten I had for ballroom dance,” said Rebecca. “It continues to help me grow both in my personal life and on the dance floor,” she added.
Rebecca had always had the desire to dance competitively but doubted her ability. She found that encouragement through her professional dance partner, Sam Walker, and the entire Westerville studio family. Rebecca has competed in three dance competitions: Columbus Dance Challenge, Buckeye Ball and Freddy Ball. She is currently taking up to six lessons a week in preparation for the National Dance Championship in Orlando, Florida on November 2-6.
Rebecca said, “what I enjoy most about these competitions is the creativity of being able to put together solo performances with Sam and the excitement of performing them in front of an audience of spectators.” “I especially love our Mambo/Salsa routine to music from Dirty Dancing,” she added.
When Rebecca isn’t on the dance floor, she is a customer service representative for DSW and enjoys spending time with her cat, Yoda and her dog, Lindsey. She also volunteers at the Columbus Zoo and loves watching the kids interact with the animals. Rebecca is driven by her passion to become the best dancer she can be and to achieve the things she never thought possible. She wants to create a memorable experience for everyone who watches her dance. She encourages anyone who can relate to her story to consider ballroom dance lessons. It has truly revived her spirit and is a whole lot of fun.
