BUCKEYE BALL COMPETITION
Student Star of the Month
DANCING IS A GREAT WAY TO EXERCISE
Student Barbara Holodnak will take center stage performing a solo and competing in the closed rhythm championship category as well as the closed categories at this year’s Fred Astaire Ohio regional competition, Buckeye Ball, August 28 and 29. This will be Barbara’s third competition Nearly three years ago, Barbara began taking lessons at the Westerville studio because not only did she love dance but she needed more exercise and a way to relieve stress. She also knew it would help her build confidence since she had always been a bit shy and kept to herself. After a few weeks of dancing, she noticed that not only did she feel better physically and emotionally but she had gained this confidence that even her friends and family took notice.
“You'd be surprised how much of a workout dancing really is,” said Barbara Holodnak. “No matter what your current fitness level, ballroom dancing is a great way to exercise without feeling like you're working out, it helps relieve stress and maintain good posture.”
Dancing allows Barbara that personal time to have fun while blossoming into a better overall person and dancer. She enjoys taking formal dance training because it provides her the foundation at her own pace along with the individual attention she needs to grow as a dancer. She also loves getting captivated by the music and dance movements. Barbara takes a few lessons a week and attends some of the group classes to improve her dancing ability. Dancing has taught her coordination and it has also sharpened her mental skills. She feels the most challenging aspect of dancing is good posture. It is critical to always maintain good posture whether you are dancing or not. Mistakes on the dance floor are not as apparent if you have good posture. She encourages everyone to consider dance as their escape to everyday physical and mental pressure because of the positive impact it has had on her life.
Within the last few years, Barbara has participated in a few local, regional and national Fred Astaire competitions where she has received recognition for her growth as a dancer and competitor. She plans to continue competing with one of her goals being to one day compete at the Ohio Star ball which is the largest Pro/Amateur dance competition in the world. Barbara’s focus at this time is to continue training for the Buckeye ball taking place on August 28 and 29 at McKinley Grand Hotel in Canton, Ohio. If you would like to attend the competition to watch and cheer on Barbara and the other contestants please contact our studio at (614) 890-9790.
